Samsung Electronics Succeeded in 31-inch OLED TV
Samsung Electronics developed the first 31-inch AM OLED TV in the world. Samsung developed its own AM OLED technology and succeeded in applying the technology to its prototype 31-inch TV.
The company announced on December 12 that it will introduce its prototype at CES2008, the biggest consumer electronics trade show held in Las Vegas on January 7 next year.
An AM OLED consists of two glass substrates and light-emitting fluorescent organic compound which fills the gap between two substrates. AM OLED TV is much slimmer than LCD TV and much better than LCD TV in terms of video quality, response time, contrast, and power consumption. But AM OLED is expensive and has several technical difficulties to make it bigger. Sony released only a limited number of 11-inch AM OLED TVs recently.
“We have the technological ability to make 40-inch AM OLEDs but we should wait until 2010 to mass produce large AM OLEDs at a reasonable price,†said one official of Samsung.
In 2005, Samsung drew global attention by developing a 40-inch Am OLED panel but it failed to commercialize AM OLED TVs because of technical difficulties. Samsung can maintain its lead by securing the technology to produce 31-inch AM OLED TVs. Samsung SDI also succeeded in the development of 31-inch OLED panels, which means Samsung SDI is in competition with Samsung Electronics LCD Business.
